Astros and New York City

Let’s be clear….I am an unapologetic fair weather baseball fan.  It’s not really my thing.  To some degree you can blame that on where I grew up and the local team.

I grew up in Texas where football is king.  The local 9 have been mediocre most of my life.  Their one foray into the World Series was emblematic of the team.  They were swept by the White Sox and looked like the moment was too big for them despite having a few future Hall of Famers on the team.

That brings us to today.

I am enjoying the heck out of watching this Astros team play ball!  Somehow they have taken the game that has never seriously captured my imagination and made it seem like so much more fun.

Now some of that “fun” is just plain winning, of course.  But that’s just the beginning.  That only makes me look up from my busy life.  It takes more than that to pull me in!

And this Astros team has done that.

I am taping games, following afternoon games at work, talking baseball at the office with co-workers (one in particular is a HUGE baseball fan and is probably shocked to see my sudden enthusiasm), watching postgame press conferences, learning about stats and strategies, etc.

It’s ridiculous…..and it’s all because of this team.  There is something about the joy with which these men play the game that draws me in.

They are a young talented group with a few salty veterans mixed in for experience.  The team was built on an analytics foundation (which is right up my alley).  All of which is cool…but it’s the joy that makes it work for me.  I root for these guys.  They are hard not to root for.

Oh and then there’s this……they hit like nobodies business.

And as if that wasn’t enough…

…they could potentially be tearing through Boston, New York, and Los Angeles on the way to a franchise first World Series Title!  That would be AWESOME for a Texas boy!

Go Astros!
